STAGE 13 Begin to build up the stems with a second layer of sap green and Winsor yellow.Work with the same method, starting on the right-hand side and grading it out to the left with clean water.Work in sections, and once dry, apply a third wash in the same way. STAGE 14 Using successive washes of the same mixes, build up the sepals with the same method. Strengthen the mix with each layer by adding more paint, and pay careful attention to the highlights and shading when grading out. STAGE 15 Strengthen the leaves with the mix of manganese blue and cadmium yellow for the undersides and the sap green,Winsor yellow and French ultramarine mix for the top sides. STAGE 16 Use the alizarin crimson and cadmium red mix to lay in a wash on the thorns.Apply the paint with a size 2 round. STAGE 17 Switch to the size 5 and strengthen the insides of the rose petals on the flower head with a rose doré and alizarin crimson mix. Strengthen the mix with more alizarin crimson and work it into the recesses. STAGE 18 Strengthen the outside petals with a permanent magenta and alizarin crimson mix. Keep it moving to avoid hard lines on the petals: permanent magenta is a staining colour. STAGE 19 Allow the flower head to dry and then strengthen it further by adding a mix of alizarin crimson and neutral tint to the shadow areas using the size 2 brush.Apply the mix to the recesses on both the insides and outsides of the petals. t t t t t t t t
