Start Art 8 62 www.painters-online.co.uk STAGE 1 Using the B grade pencil roughly sketch the basic cottage shapes in the lower third of the composition and distant hill shapes in the top third. These drawn lines do not need to be completely accurate as they are there for guidance only. STAGE 2 With your sponge, collect a good glob of yellow, and without using water, sponge a very basic random pattern over parts of the distant moorland and cottages. STAGE 3 Using the same sponge complete with residue yellow, begin to add a little crimson over the same areas. Feel free to add a little water to vary the paint consistency. Be sure to leave some parts of the yellow and white board showing. We are simply after an abstracted blur of colour. STAGE 4 Again use a little sponge action, this time adding some blue lake. Notice how by scrubbing the translucent paint over the surface with the sponge you are able to create other colours. STAGES 5 & 6 Now swap over to the palette knife to block in some of the dark moorland. You will notice that when using the palette knife you can create thicker, more opaque colour. You are also able to create texture. STAGE 7 After wiping your palette knife clean, transfer to your brush. Load the brush with a little phthalo blue before working over some of the burnt sienna. You will find that the translucent phthalo is able to darken the sienna; this creates a very satisfying rich, deep dark.
