I would love nothing more than a set of art supplies with a hundred different colours to choose from. But while it sounds like artistic nirvana, it really is not necessary. Colour mixing is much more rewarding, educational and economical. Your basic palette With a very small palette of only seven colours, you can create an endless array of colour mixes. Earth tones Earth tones can be created by adding different colours into burnt umber.All of these colours can be turned into a pastel by adding white.These swatches show the earth tone mix (top swatch), and what it looks like with white added (bottom swatch). Oranges Cadmium red medium or alizarin crimson mixed with cadmium yellow will produce various shades of orange.Adding white to these colours will give you coral, peach, melon and so on. Violets and purples Shades of violet and purple can be created by mixing cadmium red medium and Prussian blue or alizarin crimson and Prussian blue.Adding white to these mixes will give you shades of lavender, orchid, mauve and so on. Greens Greens can be difficult to mix due to the hundreds of possible variations.You can achieve green with yellow and blue or with yellow and black.Adding brown yields an earthy green. Shades Mixing a palette colour with black produces a shade. Tints Mixing a palette colour with white produces a tint.
