SPRING Spring trees are refreshing to paint. They herald the start of a new year, and offer bright colours in contrast to the cool colours of winter. STAGE 1 The tree shape and details are still visible through the spring foliage, so careful drawing of the tree trunk and branches is required. Wet the sky area with clean water using the large detail brush, down to the base of the background trees. Using the same brush and ultramarine, paint the sky onto the still wet surface, painting over the trees so that the blue sky is visible through the branches. Whilst this is still wet, begin by dropping in a light wash of cadmium yellow and cobalt, avoiding the centre of the picture, then add a little sunlit green with cadmium yellow along the base of the background trees. Leave to dry. t t
