Start Art 8 28 www.painters-online.co.uk First steps in watercolour Enjoy learning how to paint in watercolour by following Fiona Peart’s easy step-by-step-demonstration using just two colours and two brushes A t first watercolour can seem to be a tricky, unpredictable medium, but as long as you stick to a few basic principles when you first start using it, you will begin to understand how much you can manipulate it to achieve what you want. Learning how to use wash techniques will help you to understand the consistency of watercolour and how it moves and runs. For this little painting you will need the minimum of materials and just two hours of your spare time to complete it (including the drying time). Transfer the line drawing onto your A4 size paper by either copying it or tracing it. Tape your paper to the board at the top and begin with the board at a slight slope of about 15 degrees. This will allow the paint to flow gently down the paper. Place a flattened roll of kitchen roll under the board to create the slope as well as avoid the board slipping Demonstration: Coastal Jetty You will need… l One sheet of A4 Bockingford watercolour paper, 140lb weight NOT surface l The Golden Leaf brush, or one inch wash brush l A round brush, ideally natural hair that comes to a good point, size 10 or 12 l The following watercolours: raw sienna or a pale yellow, not too acid; bluebell or a purple l Masking fluid (optional) l Toothpick, shaper tool, ruling pen or similar tool to apply the masking fluid l Board to attach your painting to (this can be the back of a kitchen tray, it need not be a special board) l Kitchen roll
