Start Art 8 16 www.painters-online.co.uk STAGE 1 This practice picture is worked using very reduced, yet sweeping lines. Quickly sketch the subject using a 6B graphite pencil with a sweeping flow of lines. This is important. Keep sharpening the graphite pencil otherwise the lines will be too broad. Only the ear and the collar are drawn using solid lines. The muzzle of the Border Terrier appears a bit wider due to the thickly drawn fur.Around the throat, the hair is slightly bristly. The Terrier’s eye is round with the lid stroke running outwards. STAGE 2 Colour in the Border Terrier’s eye and ear using the 6B graphite pencil, making the bottom of each one a little darker. It is important to leave a blank glint of light in the upper part of the pupil. Colour in the nose and the dog’s collar in the same way, leaving some lighter areas free on the nose. For large areas, hold the pencil at a slight angle to the paper, so that virtually no individual lines can be seen. Shade the background behind the face in a light shade of grey. Draw the main contours using sweeping strokes of a 6B graphite pencil. Add the tones of the ear, eye, nose and collar. Technique tip Light pastel pencils and graphite pencils work well blended together to create a Border Terrier’s fur. However, the pastel pencils should only be used sparingly. This will give a colourful texture to the fur with a three- dimensional effect. t t
