August 2022 | September 2022 NEWS 04 Volume 8 No.5 PHILIP SLOPER RIP Philip Sloper, the former managing director of refrigeration and air conditioning distributor Thermofrost Cryo, has died aged 70. After reading for a degree in Natural Sciences at Cambridge University, Philip joined Delta Metals as a graduate trainee and was assigned to work at Delta Cryo Ltd, based in Birmingham. ln 1982 the company was acquired by United Termofrost and merged into a single company renamed Thermofrost Cryo Ltd. At that time Philip became marketing director of the new company. He performed the role with distinction and oversaw continual growth in the firm, eventually becoming managing director in 2004. He retired from the company in 2014. Outside work, Philip was a keen windsurfer in his younger years and had a lifelong interest in classic cars. His pride and joy was a 1970s Porsche 911, which he purchased and restored to pristine condition. Together with his wife, Wendy, he enjoyed classic car rallies, motorsport events and classic touring, visiting numerous countries along the way. In a statement, the company said: "Thermofrost Cryo benefitted greatly from Philip’s vast industry knowledge, forensic attention to detail and impressive work rate. He retired from the company after 35 years of service, having become a well- known and respected leader in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. Philip will be greatly missed by family, friends and colleagues.'' Any donations in memory of Philip would be welcomed at the Motor Neurone Disease Association, https://www.mndassociation.org and/or the Mary Stevens Hospice, https://www.marystevenshospice.co.uk Philip Sloper Carrier chillers cool landmark building A major refurbishment of London's 111 Buckingham Palace Road includes a new air conditioning system with high-e ciency Carrier screw chillers. Tenants occupying the landmark building, near Buckingham Palace and Victoria Station, now benefit from indoor comfort provided by two Carrier AquaForce 30XBE air-cooled chillers, installed by Leonari Ltd for Savills’ consultancy division. Delivering a combined total of 2.4MW of cooling, the chillers are equipped with variable speed fan motors to minimise noise levels and maximise energy savings, delivering a seasonal energy e ciency ratio (SEER) for cooling of up to 4.6. Due to the sensitive location in the heart of London, the project was logistically challenging, and involved tight space limitations due to the restricted rooftop location for the chillers. The chiller lift, requiring a 450-tonne crane, took place over a weekend, with London's busy Buckingham Palace Road closed for less than a day. The building remained fully occupied during the project, requiring particular attention to the needs of occupants. Lifting the chillier into place at 111 Buckingham Palace Road WiRACHP launches podcast The IOR's Women in RACHP Network released the first episode of its podcast, The States of Matter, to mark International Women in Engineering Day. 100 Years of Rebel Women brings together a panel who, between them, have over 100 years of experience working in the refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump sector. They share what the network means to them, explore how the expectation and attitudes toward women in engineering have changed and revisit some career highs, lows and everything in between. This episode is the first of a series which will deal with various topics relevant to individuals working in the RACHP sector or to anyone considering a career in the industry. During light-hearted and informative conversations, the panels will share their experiences and knowledge to support and encourage others working in the field. They will address some of the many preconceptions about working in a” male- dominated field” and hopefully encourage the next generation of engineers Follow https://statesofmatter.podbean.com/ to listen to 100 Years of Rebel Women and to find out about the release of future episodes.
