Start Art 8 25 www.painters-online.co.uk RT START STAGE 1 The basic shape of the ear is a narrow oval, tapering downwards (an egg sitting on its point). Using the H pencil lightly mark the guidelines for the ear and indicate the main contours. The guidelines make it easier to capture the shape. STAGE 2 Erase the guidelines. Mark the darkest areas (shading in the inner areas) using a medium- hard pencil (HB). Make sure that the hatching follows the shape. STAGE 3 Develop the hatching further using denser and overlapping lines. For the darkest areas, use the soft pencil (4B). Go over the most important contours using this pencil too.The pencil needs to be well sharpened for the hatching. Soft pencils need re- sharpening frequently, as they wear out more quickly than hard ones. STAGE 1 Outline the mass of hair using a hard pencil (H) and indicate its flow with some initial lines. First make these basic lines very light. Here, the long, smooth hair is drawn from the parting using equally long, lightly sweeping lines. STAGE 2 Add more lines using an HB pencil, paying attention to the sweep, curvature and texture. Light- reflecting areas can be left blank or the lines removed afterwards with an eraser. Make dark parts darker by drawing with the soft pencil and then smudging it. STAGE 3 Continue in the same way.The strands are made to look three- dimensional by accentuating them with a soft, well- sharpened pencil. Gleaming areas can be added by erasing them as desired.
