Use masking fluid and a brush to mask the trees, fence posts, stile and signpost, then mask the grasses with a ruling pen. 2 Colour: French ultramarine, burnt umber Brush: 2.5cm (1in) wash brush Notes: Wet the sky area with clean water, then paint in the blue areas with ultramarine, leaving space for clouds. Mix in some burnt umber to paint darker areas, then allow to dry. 3 Colour: Raw sienna, green gold, Hooker’s green Brush: 2.5cm (1in) wash brush Notes: Paint a wash of raw sienna behind the trees on the left, then add green gold and then Hooker’s green, wet-in-wet. 4 Colour: Greenish blue (cobalt blue and Hooker’s green mix) Brush: 13mm (½in) Round bristle brush Notes: Lay a paper mask over the horizon line and stipple the trees and hedges along it. 5 Colour: Blue-green (a mix of olive green and cobalt blue), Hooker’s green Brush: 13mm (½in) Round bristle brush Notes: Use the paper mask horizontally to paint the hedgerow in the middle distance. While this is wet, stipple Hooker’s green at the bottom. 6 Colour: Soft green (a mix of Hooker’s green and cobalt blue), raw sienna Brush: No. 8 Round brush Notes: Paint the distant fields with a pale mix of Hooker’s green and cobalt blue, then raw sienna coming further forwards. 7 Colour: Green gold, raw sienna, Hooker’s green Brush: No. 8 Round brush Notes: Paint the right- hand distant field with green gold, then mix green gold and raw sienna to paint the nearest field. Paint shadows in the field with Hooker’s green. 8 Colour: Shady green (mix of burnt umber and olive green) Brush: Half-Rigger Notes: Paint the distant tree trunks. Allow to dry. Stage 1
