PORTRAITS 13 SKETCHING & PAINTINGGUIDE APRIL 2020 www.painters-online.co.uk 1 Start by blocking in a rough silhouette of a head with random strokes of diluted blue violet. Allow to dry and add white to the paint. Apply a large block of the resulting light violet for the forehead. 2 Add another stroke above but slightly shorter in length. 3 Use the edge of the brush to produce a thin line for the top bridge of the nose and a larger block for the bottom. Add two small dabs for the nostrils. 4 Paint two downward angled strokes for cheekbones and a couple of marks to link the cheekbones to the forehead. Glide in one long relaxed stroke for the ear. 5 Add two small dabs within the corners of the eye sockets; then a large angled stroke on one side below the nose and a small drag next to it for the top of the mouth. 6 Add the cheek with a single angled block on one side of the face below the cheekbone. 7 Paint a small dab for the bottom lip and a larger angled block for the chin, then connect the two with a small downward stroke. 8 A large angled block for the neck finishes the structure. This simple framework provides the basis for you to develop the portrait further, allowing you to take it to a more finished conclusion, shown right Taken from Painting Portraits in Acrylics by Hashim Akib (Search Press, 2019).
