FLOWERS 11 SKETCHING & PAINTINGGUIDE APRIL 2020 www.painters-online.co.uk This was taken from Botanical Illustration from Life by Isik Güner (Search Press, 2019). See page 2 for details 3 Definition Define each tepal clearly by adding more layers on top, with an increasing density of pigment. Sharpen some of the veins further by applying pigments on a dry surface, but always keep your water brush to hand and soften these veins if necessary. 4 Realism Increase the tone of the colour until you capture the volume, depth and colour match. Continue adding further layers with drier pigments until it looks realistic. Remember to make all the brush strokes in the same direction as the veins. Use a fine, pointed brush with a dense pigment to define the edges of each tepal – we must understand clearly which is on top and which is underneath. Once you complete the flower, add another layer to the centre, sharpen the details and increase the tone. Add more shadow colour to the centre for a more three-dimensional look. ➌ ➍ Colours to mix: Very diluted permanent rose and Winsor blue (green shade). Use this colour for the centre of the tepals and for some of the shadow areas to obtain a more vivid image and a better colour Colours to mix: Cobalt violet and a bit of permanent magenta.
