FLOWERS Crocus in watercolour by Isik Güner 10 SKETCHING & PAINTINGGUIDE APRIL 2020 www.painters-online.co.uk 1 Focus on the centre Start from the centre. Make sure you have applied the first layers of colour very delicately, with detail. The shape and structure of the stamens and the pistil must be clearly visible. Apply diluted pigments directly on to a dry surface for such fine details. Application of light grey colour on the tepals and in between the stamens will help you to capture a clear stamen form. I use cobalt violet directly on top of the first layers. Focus on the veins of the tepals. Simply paint these veins, either on a damp surface or on a dry surface and wet the top after each or every other vein application. Colours to mix: Very diluted mix of cobalt violet, Naple’s yellow and a bit of indigo. Use this colour for the centre, on the tepals. Colours to mix: A diluted mix of cadmium yellow and cadmium lemon. Use this colour for the filaments. Add a bit of neutral tint into this mix for shadow areas. Cadmium yellow can be used directly for the anthers. Observe pollen grains on these anthers, if there are any, dot dry paint on to a dry surface. 2 Colour of tepals Start with a very pale pink colour and apply enough water for the base. Observe clearly where the pink colour changes to white. Keep the white areas dry (the centre of the tepals). Colours to mix: Start with a diluted mix of permanent rose and Winsor blue (green shade) for the first layers. ➊ ➋
