www.painters-online.co.uk Step 11 1 Paint in the stems, altering the greens for variety: use a mix of indigo and green gold. 2 To complete the painting of the orchid, paint in the stem at the very tip and add the vivid green bud just emerging. Step 12 1 With the orchid complete, it’s time to determine the final composition. I used corners from an old card mount, my ‘L plates’, to help. Use a pencil to lightly mark in where you want the edges of the composition to be. 2 Use a large set square to lightly pencil in the outer edges. Step 13 1 At this stage, I couldn’t wait to add some brighter colour. Refer back to your background fabrics and work out which one you want to use. I decided to use the lovely jade-coloured fabric with a gold pattern, for which I used ultramarine turquoise. Don’t use too much of this strong colour – apply it around the bottom right-hand corner of the composition and then wash it out with lots of clean water. 2 While the paint is still wet, mark in the pattern with a gold crayon. Don’t worry about making the marks too precisely.
