5 EXPLORE WATERCOLOUR 2020 FLOWERS www.painters-online.co.uk Step 2 Begin by lightly sketching in one of the flowers and a small length of stem beneath it. In this project we will draw a little and then paint a little and so on. Step 3 1 Start with the flower petals. I like to establish my darks early on. Use shadow violet with a touch of green gold and new gamboge to suggest the shadows at the petal base. 2 Really study the white petals to draw out the various colours contained there; touch these in, adding form to the petals as you do so. Allow the flower to dry, so that you can keep the distinct lines. Step 4 1 Use a mid-green mix of green gold, indigo and a touch of ultramarine turquoise to add further depth where needed. Each petal shows off its neighbours well because of the contrast of light and dark between them. 2 Work on the centre of the flower, using concentrated mixes of new gamboge and green gold to pick out the key shapes. 3 While the paint in the flower centre is still damp, add further detail with a golden-yellow water-soluble wax pastel.
