Winter Moving from one extreme to the other, this painting provides a stark contrast to the autumnal colours on the previous pages. Apart from the hints of orange in the field stalks, this painting is almost monochrome. I masked out the tops of the few main branches to retain the whites of the snow. I set off by flicking in the background trees with the cobalt blue and manganese violet mix. Next, I painted a light wash of a manganese blue and cadmium orange mix for the background field; building up the strength as you come forward with addition of manganese violet. The closer we got to the foreground, the more I started to spatter the paint. The left-hand side of the ground used the slightly colder mix of cobalt blue, cadmium orange and a touch of manganese violet. ▲ Winter , 16½ x 26¾in.
