Here we are faced with full summer foliage in all its verdant glory. Admittedly, I have used some flicked paint in the background trees but the foreground is predominantly painted with larger brushstrokes to emulate the lush foliage. Notice also that apart from the lower trunks the majority of the tree is hidden behind the curtain of leaves. My green colour mixes for summer are much more ‘rounded’ in stark contrast to the rather ‘acid’ greens of the spring. I started off by flicking in an Indian yellow and cobalt blue mix into the background trees, then overlaid a cobalt blue wash once it had dried. I then started to build up the lightest greens with a mix of aureolin and manganese blue. The mid-section was a mix of Indian yellow and cobalt blue. Those lovely velvety dark greens were made with the two helio turquoise mixes (this paint is also called phthalo blue), taking care to paint round the lighter greens. The trunks were the madder brown and French ultramarine mix. MIXES USED IN THIS PAINTING ▲ Summer , 16½ x 26¾in.
