With demand for environmentally friendly electricity-based heating booming, the German branch of STIEBEL ELTRON expects to have produced 80,000 heat pumps – an increase of 60 percent compared to the previous year. As a result, the company is planning further investments of more than 600 million euros. Production capacities will be expanded, research and development financed, and 400 new jobs will be created. For the current year, an even greater leap to 250,000 heat pumps is now expected, and perhaps even the 300,000 mark could be reached. The UK branch, based in Bromborough, Wirral, has placed significant investment into its own recruitment drive as well as into its own facilities, with the company set to launch a brand-new training centre and showroom this Autumn. www.stiebel-eltron.co.uk Supporting Berkeley Homes’ sustainable vision through heat pump installation Vital Energi has been awarded a £3.1m contract to design and build the Energy Centre for phase 3 of Berkeley Homes North East London’s Woodberry Down development, which is located next to Finsbury Park. Commenced in 2009, Berkeley is regenerating the neighbourhood in a 30-year project which will deliver over 5,500 mixed-tenure new homes. The development will be built over 8 phases, and will create a bustling community which is also home to 15 acres of landscaped parkland, 42 acres of open water, including a water sports and open water swimming reservoir, and the Woodberry Wetlands –a dedicated nature reserve cared for by the London Wildlife Trust. Vital Energi will install 800kW of air source heat pumps (ASHP) on the roofs of two blocks, which will extract heat from the air and supply heating and hot water to the development. The Energy Centre will be a double height space (9m high) located adjacent to the basement and ground floor levels, so plant deliveries will require complex engineering, including a specialist movement company and temporary works design. Kensa’s vision for decarbonisation met with approval by industry peers A UK’s leading expert on ground source heat pump systems, Kensa Group, presented its work on ‘Integrated Energy Systems and Networked Heat Pumps’ at the 2022 Technical Symposium run by CIBSE, and was proud to have its findings published in a peer-reviewed whitepaper. The paper is available for CIBSE members to download. Over the last 18 months, Kensa has delivered an extensive body of evidence-based work and a stand-out communications campaign exploring the potential of street-by-street installations of ground source heat pump technology in communities. The findings were written in a paper by Karl Drage and Dr Manju Mishra which was presented to CIBSE and heavily peer-reviewed in a process that took six months. The findings from the whitepaper research also informed a multi-channel national communications campaign demonstrating the viability of Networked Heat Pumps. ‘Welcome to Green Street’ was presented through a mobile augmented reality (AR) experience taking users on a virtual trip down Green Street (modelled on the real Green Street in urban Glasgow. 06 N E W S October | November 2022
