16 By Joe Hannan, Managing Director, Energy Training Network The Energy Training Network - Creating a Renewable Generation Heat pumps have enjoyed a lot of media attention over the past 2 years with consumer feedback ranging from extremely happy to extremely unhappy. The unhappy customers have generally lost faith in the technology, having become disheartened by the fact that they have invested significantly to support eorts to reduce carbon emissions by moving away from fossil fuels and taking up renewable energy initiatives, only to feel let down by poor installation or mis-sold incorrectly sized or unsuitable units. Government initiatives, in the form of various renewable heat incentive schemes and grants, mobilised consumers to buy February | March 2023 T R A I N I N G Joe Hannan, Managing Director, Energy Training Network and install heat pumps across the UK. With some incentive schemes being time limited, there was a rush to get the units installed and commissioned before the deadlines of the schemes expired. Heating frenzy At the time, demand for heat pumps significantly outweighed the availability of qualified and, more importantly, experienced engineers to install them. The result being thousands of domestic and commercial heat pumps were installed in a heat pump frenzy of sorts.
