SUPPORTER NEWS | 3 New research coming soon Earlier this year, you, our community stepped up to raise funds for the Coeliac UK Research Fund through our Journey to a Cure appeal. We’ve been able to use these funds to call out for research projects that have the potential to make a real difference to people with coeliac disease. We’re delighted to announce that we have received some fantastic applications which will now undergo our rigorous checking process to identify the best projects to support over the coming months. Keep an eye out early next year for the announcement of the successful projects! Thank you to our community for your support with raising these funds, we’d love to be able to fund every single application possible but unfortunately we simply don’t have sufficient funds to do so. If you’d like to show support for the Research Fund with a gift you can donate here: www.coeliac.org.uk/donate/ In memory of Dorothy Foster A memorial gift is a special way to remember and honour a loved one whilst also helping us to continue supporting those that need to live gluten free. We are very grateful to receive donations that have been made in memory of a loved one and recently heard from Gill, who was kind enough to share her late mother Dorothy’s story with us. “Mum started to fall ill in about 1965, soon after my birth. The doctors did so many tests, then somebody suggested they start to restrict her diet, reintroducing foods gradually to see if anything triggered her violent stomach upsets. It was this which led to her diagnosis. Once diagnosed, our holidays and days out were restricted for many years as no one had heard of gluten free in those days. Mummade all her own bread and cakes and all our friends and family were given a bag of flour if they wanted to cater for her. It was always her wish that Coeliac UK should be remembered in her and my father’s will, as thanks to the help and support of the charity, she enjoyed a full and active life, playing tennis and fell walking up into her mid-eighties. She lived to the ripe old age of 91, 51 years after her diagnosis!” For more information about memorial gifts, or leaving us a gift in your will, please contact our Fundraising team, fundraising@coeliac.org.uk for more information, or visit www.coeliac.org.uk/giftsinwills Coeliac UK at The International Celiac Disease Symposium – October 2022, Sorrento, Italy The International Celiac Disease Symposium (ICDS) is a meeting of the world’s leading scientists, patient advocacy groups and healthcare professionals with a special interest in coeliac disease. It is organised by the International Society for the Study of Celiac Disease (ISSCD) and offers the opportunity to network with experts and practitioners and share the latest insights into the condition. This year the programme covered a range of topics from the causes and triggers of coeliac disease to diagnosis, associated conditions and ongoing management and follow up. Our very own Head of Food Policy, Emily Hampton gave a presentation entitled ‘Contamination and Food labelling’ which provided an overview on the latest global developments on Precautionary Allergen Labelling (PAL) and in particular how this impacts our community. This draws on the work our Evidence and Policy team have recently carried out in this area, which highlights some of the future developments we might expect. As part of the academic poster session, our Research Officer, Alice Andrews showcased our latest research into the gluten free diet, clinical trials and alternative treatments. You may remember having your say last year when we asked for your views – we couldn’t have done it without you! You can find out more about the event here: www.coeliac.org.uk/news
