This year our Coeliac Awareness Week campaign ‘coeliac disease is different for everyone’ aimed to speed up the path to diagnosis by highlighting the lesser known symptoms of coeliac disease and encourage people to take our self-assessment to see if they should be tested. We were overwhelmed with the support we received from the community in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. From group walks and cook-alongs to awareness raising in schools, nurseries, hospitals and cafés. The Western Health and Social Care Trust hospital in Northern Ireland showed their staunch support with an awareness raising event at Altnagelvin Hospital, Derry- Londonderry. Laura McGrath, who featured in our campaign after being diagnosed with coeliac disease due to her severe neurological symptoms, attended the event to encourage more people to get tested. As a result of your amazing awareness raising over 10,000 people recognised the symptoms and took our online self- assessment which is a phenomenal response and we are so happy that we may have been able to change the lives of 10,000 people for the better. Altnagelvin Hospital staff and Laura McGrath show their support during Awareness Week New support for young people Earlier this summer, our amazing young volunteer Noveed and 15 young people with coeliac disease from across the UK joined up on Zoom for the pilot session of our Coeliac UK Virtual Club. The meet up is for junior members aged between 12-15 years old and aims to provide a safe space for those who want to share ideas and experiences living gluten free. The theme of the session was eating out and travel and it began and ended with a poll to understand how confident they each felt when eating out. By the end of the session, the average confidence level had noticeably improved. The teens listened to Noveed talk about his personal experience, for many of them it was the first opportunity they’d had to interact with people their age with coeliac disease and the delight with which they shared their own stories was truly inspiring. This is just one example of how your support makes a difference. We’re looking forward to sharing more resources and activities for young people in the future. Our new online shop is live!
