Crossed Grain

August 2022 Issue 118 Your charity newsletter Research into coeliac disease is the key to make the future better for everyone with the condition. You, our community, have made an incredible difference to what we can achieve. Earlier this year, we asked for your help to raise money for our Research Fund and you went above and beyond! Thank you to everyone who has donated, your support means this year we are making a total of £280k available to researchers across two research calls. Our latest research call This year we held our first virtual Research Summit. In this exciting event we brought together international leaders in coeliac disease research, and research into other autoimmune conditions. These scientists are top of their field and with their knowledge and your funds, we have the power to make great strides towards achieving our research priorities, including progress towards a cure for coeliac disease. They were joined by a range of clinicians, other autoimmune charities and members fromCoeliac UK’s Research Strategy Board (RSB) and Research Awards Panel (RAP) to build on our previous work setting research priorities. In 2018, along with our community, we identified our ten top research priorities. Four years on, the Research Summit was an opportunity for the research community to discuss our current understanding of coeliac disease and evaluate the progress towards answering those top priorities. At the workshop, we focused on six research priorities that need fundamental building blocks to help answer them. Researchers shared ideas for future research projects and discussed the fantastic opportunity that coeliac disease research presents. Coeliac disease has links and similarities to many other autoimmune conditions, so the right research could benefit people with coeliac disease, while potentially improving our understanding of other autoimmune conditions, too. We’re excited to have £250k available to fund the next tranche of groundbreaking research, focusing on the priorities discussed at our Summit. We’re inviting researchers to submit their applications now. The project selected will represent the cutting edge of autoimmune disease research – keep an eye out on our website and in future editions of Crossed Grain for updates on the project. Coeliac disease in children and young people As part of our ongoing commitment to support our younger community, our second research call is for a project focusing on coeliac disease in children and young people. £30k is available and we’re looking for a project that will make a significant impact on the lives of children and young people with coeliac disease. We couldn’t do it without you We launched the Research Fund in 2018 to support our ten top research priorities and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated. Without your support, it would not be possible to have these research calls and fund life changing research. Your support means that one day, we may be able to prevent or even cure coeliac disease. Keep an eye out for the announcement of the outcome for both research calls at the beginning of next year.
