Crossed Grain

2 | SUPPORTER NEWS Meet Rosie, one of our newest fundraisers! Rosie is just 10 years old and is undertaking the mammoth Capital Ring Walk, a 78 mile walk around London that is split into 15 separate walks. Rosie was diagnosed with coeliac disease in March 2022 and because she and her family have had such great support from our team here at Coeliac UK she wanted to raise money to help us find a cure. “Before I was diagnosed, I was feeling very unwell but now I am a lot better and Coeliac UK have been very helpful,” she told us. She says that she now has the energy to complete her amazing challenge, alongside her family and accompanied by her wonderful dog, Cosmo. Rosie has so far raised an amazing £1,400 . A huge well done Rosie and thank you for raising funds for our research, to support others who need to live gluten free. Rosie is fundraising for Coeliac UK by walking 78 miles around London Your support has helped to fund new research projects Coeliac UK is delighted to be funding three research projects commencing in the Autumn. Thanks to your generosity, we have awarded grants totalling £437,000 which is incredible! Researchers at the University of Oxford will explore how cells in the gut interact with one another, before and after gluten exposure, in coeliac disease and refractory coeliac disease. They are hoping to increase understanding of the disease process and maybe identify targets for new treatments. A research team at the University of Surrey will be looking to improve the psychological support offered to children and young people with coeliac disease, by adapting resources that are currently used to help people with other food allergies and intolerances. The third project will investigate the diagnosis and treatment of gluten ataxia (a rare neurological condition) to reduce long term implications. You can find further information and updates on the research here: www.coeliac.org.uk/current-research How you made a difference in 2022 Last year we continued to provide vital services to those who need to live gluten free, thanks to your incredible support. Read about the impact you made last year at www.coeliac.org.uk/impact2022 or call 0333 332 2033 to request a paper copy via post.
