Crossed Grain

2 | SUPPORTER NEWS Duncan’s amazing fundraising story Early diagnosis of coeliac disease in children is crucial. Not only does it prevent children from losing out on their childhoods due to ill health, but it also reduces the risk of health complications in future. So in March, we launched the latest version of our ‘Is it coeliac disease?’ campaign, calling attention to the main symptoms to watch out for in children: slow growth, tiredness, stomach pain, bloating and sickness, and promoted our online self-assessment to help parents find out if their child needs testing. Your support for our No More Lost Childhoods campaign last year raised over £40,000 , helping support much work in this area and in particular helping fund our self-assessment website. To help, share the link to our self-assessment with anyone you know whose child might have coeliac disease. isitcoeliacdisease.org.uk/campaigns/children No more lost childhoods The journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats is not an easy one, but what about doing it on a classic Honda C90 motorbike? That is the unique challenge Duncan McConnell is going to take on this summer whilst shining a light on coeliac disease and fundraising for Coeliac UK. Duncan, who was recently diagnosed with coeliac disease, will begin his adventure in Surrey before making his way down to Land’s End and then onwards to Britain’s most north westerly point, John O’Groats. An epic journey of over 1,000 miles that he will be aiming to complete in less than two weeks and on less than £100 of fuel! Duncan will be stopping between hostels, B&Bs and pubs, alongside camping in a tent throughout his trip. We would love if our supporters were able to help us with this challenge and suggest places that can help accommodate Duncan, or places he should visit as he embarks on his travels through the country, all whilst living gluten free. Please do get in touch with the Fundraising team at fundraising@coeliac.org.uk if you have any suggestions of places for food and places to stop for a wonderful coffee and gluten free treat. A huge thanks to Duncan for taking on this incredible challenge.
