I’m writing this on a frosty December evening at home in Lincolnshire, and it’s fair to say that some of the mouth-watering birds and destinations showcased in these pages have warmed my bones somewhat. You’ll have noticed that albatrosses are already forming a central role to this guide. That continues in the article I’ve written on a trip to Tasmania (pages 6-9), where I had my first encounters with several members of this family during a pelagic trip. It’s di cult to put into words just how epic albatrosses are at sea. If you have the opportunity to see some, take it! Also in this issue, Mike Alibone reports back on a recent trip to the incredible birding nation of Colombia, where the ethereal cloudforests and steamy jungles produced a long list of super birds. Turn to pages 11-13 for a taster of why this country sits at the top of many birders’ must-visit destinations. Recently, I gave Simon Papps the tricky task of choosing a list of some of the world’s best birds. After much deliberation, he’s done a pretty solid job of selecting 10, as you’ll see on pages 17-20 – I certainly found it di cult to argue with his nominations! Meanwhile, Ed Stubbs provides some expert advice on some of the planet’s most productive migration watchpoints on pages 24-26. I hope that this selection of features whets your appetite to visit some exciting destinations in 2023, and on page 5 you’ll find some of our own o erings.
