It also features a new oil management system that ensures continuous compressor lubrication and overcomes the need for piping for an oil balance circuit, speeding up installation on site. An intelligent sensor-based defrost system only initiates defrost when absolutely necessary, maintaining up to five hours of continuous heating, ensuring the comfort of building occupants at all times. In applications with multiple systems, the smart control system staggers defrost cycles across the systems to maintain overall performance, again ensuring the comfort of occupants. “SMMS-u is a brilliant product and re- establishes Toshiba’s market leading position in VRF technology. For both installers and end users it o ers significant advantages, and we believe it will be another winner,” says Darrel. Another interesting and innovative product launch from Toshiba is HAORI, a split heat pump system that o ers a new take on light commercial and residential air conditioning aesthetics. Wall-mounted indoor units come wrapped in an attractive range of textile covers. The patented system uses sticky-backed materials that can be simply applied to the unit’s curved front panel. Units can also be customised to match a room’s decor using a supplied fabric template. This enables material from items such as curtains, cushions or drapes to be added to the unit for a perfect match. Alongside the clever patented design, in line with Toshiba’s reputation for top-notch engineering HAORI o ers best-in-class performance, with an “AAA” energy eciency rating for both heating and cooling, ultra-quiet operation and superior air quality. At the other end of the equipment spectrum, CDL added Carrier to its portfolio at the start of last year, giving customers access to the manufacturer’s high quality chillers and heat pumps alongside Toshiba and Fujitsu VRF and split systems, and CIAT airside equipment. “Carrier was an important addition for us,” says Darrel. “Our core business was originally built on DX. Gaining access first to CIAT for airside equipment and then Carrier for chillers opened up huge new opportunities in these sectors. It has proved to be extremely positive, both for ourselves and our customers.” Carrier’s recent roll-out of R-32-based AquaSnap scroll chillers gives CDL a market- leading solution in this key sector. The chillers are claimed to be significantly more energy ecient than similar competing products due to the use of improved technology and design optimisation, with a Seasonal Energy Eciency Ratio (SEER 12/7) of up to 5.33 for cooling, and a Seasonal Coecient of Performance (SCOP) of up to 3.77 for heating. The chillers exceed Ecodesign 2021 requirements by some 20 per cent, and, due to their carbon savings and lower GWP, their use attracts two BREEAM points when installed in environmentally assessed buildings. A key to CDL’s success is its outstanding customer service, which over the years has helped build a loyal and growing customer base. Stocking and product availability is a vital element. “We have always been very focussed on ensuring we have stocks of all popular models of key VRF and split products, so we can respond quickly to customer requirements. Projects can get green-lighted suddenly, and obviously those with the equipment secure the contract.” The recent introduction of local UK stocking for larger items, such as CIAT Floway air handling units and Carrier chillers and fan coils, has enabled CDL to be similarly responsive in the larger equipment sector. These items are normally manufactured to order, which can mean a wait of several weeks. With local stocking it means the distributor can supply popular models as quickly as VRF and split systems, literally the next day. “This is a game-changer,” says Darrel. He adds: “With exciting new technology coming on stream, resurgence of interest in the heat pump sector – which finally looks like fulfilling its promise, and the vaccine roll-out gathering pace across the country, we believe there is every reason to be optimistic. We are looking to the future with confidence.”
