The humidifier is providing adiabatic cooling in Weatherite’s Adtec-D free air cooling unit, boosting the cooling capacity of the system and allowing the Adtec-D to fully replace the need for mechanical cooling in some applications. The Adtec-D is a self-contained, modular cooling system that can be located either inside or outside of a building. In data hall or telecom environments, for most of the year it operates in free air cooling mode and uses the outside air alone to cool the internal environment. However, when the outside temperature rises to around 20°C, the Adtec-D switches to adiabatic cooling mode. The incoming air is then passed through the Condair ME, which evaporates water into the fresh air stream, cooling it by up to a further 12°C. By combining free air and evaporative cooling, Weatherite’s Adtec-D has recently been able to fully replace DX mechanical cooling across more than 800 switchgear rooms for a leading UK telecoms provider. www.condair.co.uk HORIBA MIRA COMMISSIONS SENSING PRECISION HORIBA MIRA has commissioned Sensing Precision to provide airflow measurement devices within its new advanced automotive testing facilities in Nuneaton. The global provider of automotive engineering, research, and validation and verification services had to overcome significant challenges with the application of its sensors, requiring accurate measurement of volumetric flow over a range of positive and negative temperatures coupled with long term durability requirements of the components was needed. Sensing Precision’s design team, with its years of industry leading expertise and knowledge, was able to provide valuable advice in response and recommended the installation of three of its Wilson Flowgrids for use on bench rigs for assessing performance of automotive heat pump and AC systems. These are designed to deliver accuracy in air pressure measurement of up to +/- 1%. Sensing Precision designs, engineers and manufactures a wide range of high performing air measurement devices. Originally founded in the 60s, the company is renowned for its unparalleled levels of accuracy in air measurement across a number of industries including HVAC, F1 motorsport, pharmaceuticals and aerospace. www.sensing-precision.com DAIKIN APPLIED EXPANDS WATER-COOLED CHILLER RANGE Daikin Applied has further extended its range of chillers with the introduction of the DWDC C series of centrifugal compressor water-cooled models. Available in capacities between 1,500 and 2,500kW, the range has been developed to optimise energy efficiency and reduce operating costs. The chillers are designed for use with low global warming refrigerants R134a, R513A or R1234ze in a single refrigerant circuit and are aimed at commercial cooling, district energy plants, and manufacturing applications. The dual compressor design delivers impressive part-load efficiency along with system redundancy comparable to operating two separate chillers, but claims a lower total installed cost. The DWDC C can also be equipped with variable speed drives for additional efficiency. Each chiller has two compressors, two lubrication systems, two control systems, and two starters connected to the evaporator and condenser. If one compressor fails, it can be removed or repaired without shutting down the other so providing an automatic backup with at least 60% of the chiller design capacity still available. Redundancy is built into the distributed control system. If a compressor controller is unavailable, the other compressor will operate normally and handle as much of the load as possible. Also, if the chillers are operating at 60% and below, the unit controls allow just one compressor to run leading to lower run hours and reduced wear and tear. The flexible control logic of the inverter drive maps exact performance curves at every condition to minimize speed and still deliver the required cooling capacity. This allows the chillers to take advantage of off- design conditions to save energy for comfort cooling applications with variable loads – even for data centres with constant heavy demand. The new series is also supported by a ‘right-sizing’ selection feature so system designers can make best use of the multiple combinations of heat exchangers, gears, and semi-hermetic motors to closely match performance to required capacity and avoid costly over-sizing. By offering R1234ze as an option, Daikin Applied is combining low GWP with high energy efficiency. The range is also available with conventional refrigerants R134a and R513A. www.daikinapplied.uk Daikin Applied chiller factory
