Modern Building Services

MODERN BUILDING SERVICES SEPTEMBER 2022 3 EDITOR’S COMMENT T his has been a summer when many of us who had a holiday in the UK were able to say we enjoyed the amazing weather. We were quick to tell people about that fantastic day on the beach and even show off our tans. On reflection, these extreme temperatures seem to be more evidence of climate change as they become more common occurrences. We have witnessed in a short period extremely hot temperatures to droughts and then flash flooding. This is clearly a cause for concern for us all, particularly regarding our health, the environment, and buildings. I like many eagerly await the election of either Foreign Secretary Liz Truss or former Chancellor Rishi Sunak to become the UK’s next Prime Minister. This should then provide us with a clear understanding of their policies for achieving the UK’s headline target to cut emissions to net zero by 2050. Although both candidates have come under scrutiny on their climate pledges the policies may include green energy levies, reduction in VAT for domestic installations of insulation, and low-carbon technologies to re- establishing a dedicated energy department. I am pleased to say that the important topics of Zero carbon buildings and Net zero will be covered in the next 2 issues of MBS. Inside this issue This issue is looking at Piped services, pumps and water, Zero carbon buildings and Installer’s view. British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA) discusses on page 9 that M&E consultants and other water equipment specifiers are encouraged to get fully up-to-speed with the Water Supply (Water Fittings Regulations 1999) with particular focus on the requirement of Regulation 4. With the UK Government setting ambitious targets to achieve decarbonisation and net zero emissions by 2050, Alex Ashton, Environmental and Sustainability Manager from Polypipe Building Services, explains how manufacturers have a role to play in a low carbon. Turn to page 18 to read more. On page 24 Alan Sharman, Technical Adviser at Walraven discusses his experiences during the past 5 years visiting construction sites to provide technical advice and solution recommendations to contractors. Alan focuses on 4 common installation problems they see on a site. As with every issue of MBS, I would be very keen to hear your thoughts and welcome all feedback.
