I find myself frequently quoting Piers Morgan “The World’s Gone Nuts” with worldwide issues from the vast flooding of Pakistan, and famine in Somalia to the potential escalation in the Ukrainian war and talk of the use of nuclear weapons! The news then turns to the challenges both business and personal that we are facing in the UK including the spiraling energy and cost of living crisis. This is unprecedented in the younger generation’s lifetime, is impacting us all, and making life more uncomfortable so it is not to be belittled. However, I do believe we are presently very lucky in the UK. We have had amazing economic growth in the past couple of decades where the majority of us have prospered and had experiences, and made purchases we could only dream of before the turn of the century. More importantly, we rarely face life-threatening events brought on by the impact of climate change, and our disagreements the majority of the time are conducted with words rather than bullets or bombs. As this is the case I do think if we are faced with a negative situation that we have no influence on then wemust refuse to succumb to it and find the energy and solutions to overcome and then control it. “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” - Michael Jordan. I knowwe can prevail. In this issue, we focus on Heating – technologies & techniques and Indoor air quality. With energy costs set to rise this winter, many businesses across the country are looking at how they can improve the efficiency of their HVAC systems and make gains wherever possible. On page 12, Steve Simmonds, Special Projects Engineer at Spirotech, looks at the benefits of water treatment and why it’s important that facility managers are clued up on this topic. Tim Tanner, Product Technical Manager – Air Diffusers & Attenuators, at TROX UK, reviews the air quality advantages of underfloor ventilation employing floor grilles/diffusers and provides tips on system design. Underfloor ventilation typically employs a displacement air movement strategy, and the air quality benefits of this approach stem from the specific methods of supply and extraction. These are best understood by comparing displacement air movement methods with those of traditional mixed air distribution systems. Turn to page 26 to read more. On Page 32, Adam Taylor, CEO of ARM Environments, explains it is important that the industry works hard to keep indoor air quality front of mind. Good communication and providing valuable insights will be key to keeping end users engaged in this important issue. David Crowson
