MODERN BUILDING SERVICES NOVEMBER 2021 3 EDITOR’S COMMENT W elcome to the November edition of MBS (Modern Building Services). Well, what a busy few months! As COP26 ended, there had been a lot of comment and thoughts about the event and issues raised from across the industry. Whilst a lot was achieved, possibly the defining image of The UN Climate Change Conference, COP26, was Alok Sharma trying not to cry and apologising after ambitions for reducing coal use were watered down on the last day. What do you think? Let us know on Twitter or Linkedin or drop us a line direct here at MBS. Back out with many networking events over recent weeks. It’s been fantastic to see so many of you face-to-face. The first large gathering was at the well renowned National ACR & Heat Pump Awards, held at the Midland Hotel, Manchester on the 20th of October. This event, celebrating its 10th anniversary, saw over 400 movers & shakers from the HVAC industry supporting and congratulating peers and colleagues. The 2022 event will be held on the 9th of June at the Queens Hotel, Leeds. I was then, very honoured to be a judge for and subsequently attend the prestigious ECA (Electrical Contractors Association) industry Awards Dinner in late October. This prestigious black-tie event was once again held at the 5-star London Hilton Bankside Hotel. The FETA (Federation of Environmental Trade Associations) annual luncheon was back at the Brewery, Chiswell street. The 600 strong audience were clearly pleased to be networking amongst themselves and of course, enthralled with the stories well-known footballer, Kevin Keegan, shared on the day. More recently, I was also very proud to be invited to judge the CSA (Commissioning Specialists Association) Awards. This dinner was held at the Guoman Tower Hotel, London. MBS were sponsors and thrilled to present an award for COMMISSIONING PROVIDER OF THE YEAR. The Winner for this prestigious award was Ashford Environmental Services. Networking aside, our main focus in recent weeks has been on COP26, held in Glasgow. A host of announcements that will affect how UK businesses address climate change coincided with COP26. CHAS, an industry authority on UK compliance and health and safety legislation, have kindly highlighted some of the key developments. Five key updates from COP26 • Net Zero targets introduced for government supply chains • Government publishes Net Zero Strategy • Company climate disclosures to become mandatory • SMEs urged to take Climate Pledge • The Environment Bill passes into law (Turn to page 22 for full details) As with every issue of MBS, I would be very keen to hear your thoughts and welcome all feedback.
