The new app, which went live on 1 April, can be downloaded for free onto any Apple iOS or Android device. It was developed in collaboration with 38 CSCS partner card operators, including the Engineering Services SKILLcard, which is used by more than 60,000 building services professionals. The app will work with all cards that display the CSCS logo and gives on-site card checkers access to a quick and secure way of ensuring everyone on site has the appropriate qualifications and training. It is designed to streamline and improve the construction industry’s current card checking procedures and deal another blow to fraudsters who try to ‘game’ the system by selling counterfeit CSCS cards and falsifying qualifications. The system is a key element of the government’s 2025 Construction Industry Strategy and most clients now insist on every worker holding a valid card. www.skillcard.org.uk Smart app will boost competence and fight fraud This year BPEC will celebrate 30 years of delivering industry leading qualifications, assessments, training courses and learning materials to the plumbing and heating industry and the wider energy sector. Established in 1992, it is a unique organisation led by employers for the benefit of the sectors, and all surplus funds generated by its activities are re-invested by The BPEC Charity. It is vital to mention the role our Charity has played, as it has funded the development of many projects that promote the benefits of a career in the plumbing industry to talented young people. It organises highly successful plumbing skills competitions for apprentices throughout the UK, which can lead on to the opportunity for selection to World Skills competitions. The BPEC Awards for Excellence, funds several awards, such as its Life Award which supports plumbing professionals in using their skills to make a difference to the lives of people who are less fortunate, both in the UK and abroad. www.bpec.org.uk/the-bpec-charity/ www.bpec.org.uk BPEC celebrates 30 years of leadership in the provision of training and qualifications SELECT’s campaign for regulation of the electrical industry continues to attract more backing, with two major industry organisations and four MSPs adding their names to the trade association’sWall of Support. The Lift and Escalator Industry Association (LEIA) and Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA) have both signed up to the online resource, which shows the organisations and individuals supporting the crusade for regulation of the electrical industry. They have been joined by a quartet of Conservative MSPs who added a virtual ‘brick’ to the wall. Signatories include Maurice Golden (Far right), Tess White, Russell Findlay and Jamie Greene. The new additions mean the Wall of Support now boasts 49 MSPs and two MPs from across the political spectrum. SELECT’s campaign, aims tomake it an offence for someone to call themselves an electrician when they have no, or inadequate, qualifications. The Scottish Government has set up an Electricians Working Group to explore the issue and two high- profile consultations on regulation have also taken place, both of which have overwhelmingly supported statutory regulation. https://select.imiscloud.com/ SELECT_WoS.html FETA and LEIA join 4 newMSPs on SELECT’sWall of Support to show backing for regulation of electrical industry
