Businesses are still grappling, amongst other things, with rising inflation, and material and skills shortages. This reminded me of the term ‘fight or flight’ which is used to describe the reaction that people have to a dangerous situation, that makes them either stay and deal with it or run away. I understand things are challenging and I read stories daily, which I am afraid don’t always have a happy ending. However, I am always heartened by stories of businesses standing up and fighting, not just talking about the challenges we face, but actually doing something positive about them through innovation, education and motivation so making a difference NOW to their businesses and our industry and its future. In this issue, we look at Air conditioning, cooling and ventilation, Working buildings; maintenance, operation and refurbishment and Piped services, pumps and water. On page 11 Andrew Nash, Residential Divisional Manager at Nuaire, discusses tackling overheating when passive ventilation methods aren’t an option. Adam Taylor, CEO at ARM Environments, explores the two main reasons why HVAC systems cost more than necessary when it comes to energy use and planned maintenance. Read more on page 18. Given the global rise in energy costs, there has never been a better time to review and assess the efficiency of your pumping systems. On page 26 Gary Wilde, Technical Services Officer at the British Pump Manufacturers Association (BPMA), offers some basic information and guidance on purchasing, maintaining, and designing pump systems for optimum energy efficiency, CO 2 reduction and capital expenditure payback time. On page 28 Steve Munn, Managing Director at Hevasure, explores some of the common problems picked up by real-time monitoring technology and explains why early detection of problems and timely intervention can save huge amounts of money and hassle.
