MODERN BUILDING SERVICES MARCH 2022 3 EDITOR’S COMMENT A s I write this piece, Russia has invaded Ukraine. We, here in the UK, along with the rest of Eu- rope and the world seems to leap from one crisis to another. In latter years alone we’ve been through Brexit, Covid and now Europe’s ‘darkest hours’ since WWII. We can only hope this is short lived and casualties are kept to a minimum. My thoughts are going out to all affected during these challenging times. Inside this issue; Figures from the Office of National Statistics (ONS) revealed that the UK’s construction output in Novem- ber 2021 was 1.3% (£197 million) above the February 2020 pre-COVID-19 level.1 While it’s great news for the industry, the additional work that is contributing to the uplift means contractors are looking for new ways to achieve hassle-free installations across tight timeframes. Neil Brown, fromMK Electric, looks at what electrical contractors and project managers can do to help streamline installations to help save costs and increase productivity on site. What is vibration? In simple terms, vibration is a mechanical phenomenon where oscillations occur about an equilibrium point. These vibrations can resonate through equipment, fixings and the building structure to create undesirable noise and discomfort for the building occupants. In the HVAC industry, most sound or noise is generated via equipment in operation and air and fluid movement through ducts and pipes. Raajan Bains, fromWalraven gives an insight into the basics of vibration control in building services. Enhancing wellbeing One of the biggest drivers of change is the WELL Building Standard (WELL), which focuses on measures that improve the health and wellbeing of occupants. With the pandemic increasing the emphasis on health, a growing number of companies are adopting the standard. Lighting has a huge impact on office space and Toby Buckley of REL Building Services, explains the impact on M&E solutions. Finally, the 25th of March has been confirmed as the deadline for the National ACR & Heat Pump Awards 2022. This year will see the great & the good attending the Queens Hotel, Leeds on the 9th of June to celebrate excellence across the HVAC industry. A solid date for your diary!
