Modern Building Services

MODERN BUILDING SERVICES JUNE 2022 3 EDITOR’S COMMENT W ell it’s certainly true what they say that time does fly when you are having fun and here we are with the first issue of MBS I have had the pleasure of editing. hat an amazingmonth, working with the teamat Warners Group Publications, and the highlight was learning about and being introduced to somany inspiring and influential individuals in the building services world. I am looking forward to continuing to work with these individuals and themany I amyet to meet. Although I paint a positive picture like somany of us that are fulfilled at work the news remains dominated by challenges at home and overseas from the atrocities in Ukraine, and the COVID-19 pandemic to the continued increase in the cost of materials, living especially energy where businesses and families alike are all feeling the pinch. Certainly, trying to reduce the impact of the increased cost of energy features inside this issue where Andy Green, Baxi’s Technical Director on page 18 discusses the vital role of commissioning in driving down emissions and mitigating soaring energy costs. Updates to the Approved Document L of the Building Regulations, which sets the standards for the energy performance and carbon emissions of new and existing buildings, were published in December. Turn to page 12 to read in the Conditioning, Cooling and Ventilation feature what JimNorris, National Head of Sales at VES says following the difficult number of years, the NHS has faced in the UK, now more than ever, everybody has been made acutely aware of the need for adequate ventilation, good indoor air quality, and a safe environment to care for those who have been hospitalised. The Importance of Summer Servicing of Thermostatic Mixing Valves (TMVs) - Water system maintenance is extremely important, with it acting as a preventive measure for greater health and safety issues within the system. Most water systems require annual servicing, recommissioning, and flushing so, it is important for facilities teams to adequately allocate time for this. Turn to page 23 to see how Ed Morris, Technical Manager at Altecnic, discusses why summer servicing of TMVs should be a priority for facilities teams to keep staff and children safe. A special mention must go to Catherine Fyfe who has been shortlisted in EuropeanWomen in Construction and Engineering Awards (Europe) - Best Woman Health & Safety category. Read more about this amazing achievement on page 6.
