MODERN BUILDING SERVICES JULY 2022 3 EDITOR’S COMMENT Y ou wait for ages for an event and then they all come along at once. Regardless of people’s views of the British royal family, it was great to see that the four-day UK bank holiday weekend for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations provided somany of us with something positive to focus on and a chance to be thankful for our neighbours, friends, family and all that we have in the UK. Then comes along our ever-popular National ACR & Heat Pump Awards to celebrate excellence across the HVAC industry. I was delighted to meet so many of you as more than 400 people attended the sell-out event, which was again hosted by comedian Bobby Davro. A special mention must go to John Emm who was named Phil Creaney’s ACR Champion for 2022 and Laura Bishop, chair of the Ground Source Heat Pump Association, who was announced as RACHPWoman of the Year. To see all the winners turn to page 30. Finally, we attended the Installer Showwhich is the UK’s biggest heating, plumbing, and electrical trade show at Birmingham’s NEC. I look forward to telling you more about our experience in the August issue of MBS. Although these were a welcome distraction, we haven’t forgotten the multiple challenges that are being faced at home and overseas from the war in Ukraine to the soaring energy costs which continue to impact negatively on our businesses and families. Inside this issue; There is much on indoor air quality and working buildings – maintenance, operation and refurbishment. We have an article from EUR ING Dave Cooper, CEO of LECS UK and CIBSE board member, who on page 10 outlines the latest developments within BSI standards that govern brakes on lifts and outlines his key recommendations to keep brakes operating safely. On page 20 Hern Yau, Product Manager at Mitsubishi Electric, discusses why attention is rightly turning to indoor air quality and David Schurk, Director of Healthcare and Applied Engineering Markets for Global Plasma Solutions and lecturer for ASHRAE. On page 25 he discusses expectation versus reality - examining air filter performance. As with every issue of MBS, I would be very keen to hear your thoughts and welcome all feedback.
