6 MODERN BUILDING SERVICES DECEMBER 2022/JANUARY 2023 INDUSTRY NEWS ABB achieves carbon-neutral operations at Finland factory ABB has achieved carbon neutral operations at its factory in Porvoo, Finland, reducing CO 2 emissions by 636 tons in its first year. This saving is equivalent to driving 112 times the length of the equator or warming an electric sauna every day for 373 years. By combining digital solutions, electrification, and renewable technologies the Porvoo factory has taken an important step towards a more sustainable value chain. The 6,600 square metre site producing wiring accessories and installation materials for the smart buildings market in the Nordics now utilises 100 percent renewable energy. By using recycled plastic as a raw material the carbon footprint has been reduced by a further 106 tons a year. On-site electric vehicle (EV) charging for employees and visitors is also charged with renewable energy. The Porvoo operation is using state-of-the-art technologies from ABB and its partners to deliver at site ABB’s Mission to Zero™ program. Mission to Zero provides the blueprint for ABB’s journey to carbon neutrality, both for its own sites and those of its customers. As well as helping global emission targets, the program helps to assure better air quality and biodiversity in communities. www.abb.com Trane® by TraneTechnologies receives European Heat Pump Association’s People’s Choice Award Trane® by Trane Technologies (NYSE:TT) has been awarded the European Heat Pump Association’s (EHPA) People’s Choice Award for its thermal system installation at Broomfield College in Derby. The project replaced the college’s existing fossil fuel boilers with a thermal system combining both air and water sourced heat pumps, reducing energy consumption by 790,000 kWh and 160 tons of CO 2 emissions, annually. The project at Broomfield College highlights howTrane is using new technologies to help our customers reduce their carbon footprint. Heat pump markets across Europe experienced record growth last year. According to the EHPA, an all-time high of 2.18 million heat pump units were sold in 2021, 34%more than the year before. The heat pumps that are installed in the EU avoid over 44 million tons of CO 2 , slightly more than the annual emissions of Ireland. www.trane.com www.trane.com CIBSE recognises rising stars and exceptional employers at the Young Engineers Awards 2022 CIBSE Young Engineers Awards (YEAs) 2022 recognises future industry change makers, as they address the big questions around the role of engineering in delivering a safe, healthy, and sustainable built environment for all. Judges named Sana Hafsa the CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year, after her engaging presentation on inspiring engineers to work collaboratively and holistically to deliver high performance buildings. Sana is a distinguished architectural engineering graduate, currently working with AESG to deliver sustainable and smart megaprojects in the Middle East and North Africa. The Apprentice of the Year Degree (level 5-7) went to Louis Kimber, with Harvey Hudson scooping the corresponding award for Apprentice of the Year Technician (level 3-5). These awards recognise the invaluable contribution made by apprentices in building services engineering and related occupations. The award is split in two to recognise apprentices at every level, celebrating those who have gained their skills and knowledge through a combination of coursework and on the job experience. The Apprenticeship was launched in partnership with the Building Controls Industry Association (BCIA) following a culmination of over four years of hard work by the Trailblazer Employer Group to address an industry-wide shortage of BEMS Controls Engineers. The seventh cohort of apprentices began their training in November 2022 taking the total number to 112. Building Controls is a fast growing market with numerous opportunities for skilled engineers. The BEMS Controls Engineer Apprenticeship offers a balance of technical training and on-the-job assessments to match the needs and requirements of the apprentice’s employer. www.grouphorizon.co.uk
