Modern Building Services

MODERN BUILDING SERVICES JANUARY 2022 3 EDITOR’S COMMENT I for one will be pleased to put 2021 behind me. Whilst there have been some incredible examples of resilience and support for customers, suppliers, colleagues and fellow peers within the industry. I’d suggest we are ready for further positivity going forward. Net Zero is now a very prominent focus for most businesses and MBS will be running much across the board on this topic. I would love to hear from you on your progress, how is your business making inroads? This issue is looking at Working Buildings – maintenance, operation and refurbishment as well as Piped Services, Pumps and Water. Architects are increasingly specifying industrial protection equipment for warehouses and distribution centres. Paul Roehricht of Brandsafe provides guidance on best practice and a robust approach to industrial protection system specification. Indoor Air Quality is high on the agenda for workers, managers, building owners and government. Investing in building ventilation will play a key role in helping the country recover from the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for future health emergencies, according to the government’s chief medical adviser Professor Chris Whitty. Stuart Smith, Group Sales Director for indoor air quality and ventilation manufacturing specialist, Nuaire looks at creating ‘safe havens’ – better indoor air quality a staple for mass-occupancy buildings Eschewing chemical additives in closed loop water treatment for a more environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative has long been accepted on the continent. Now, with the recognition of VDI2035 in CIBSE’s revised Code of Practice on Heat Networks (CP1 (2020)), it would seem the UK is finally catching up says David Whitfield, MD of Elysator UK. Evaporative cooling systems and their water treatment strategies help optimize building performance and contribute to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification and other sustainability programs. Turn to page 28 for recent Q&A which resulted from a survey of engineers and cooling tower experts inside and outside SPX Cooling Technologies to better understand how cooling towers can contribute to successful LEED projects and other sustainability initiatives. The recent release of People and Planet’s annual University League asking ‘how sustainable is your university?’ found that despite 46% of higher education institutes making good progress in this area, the majority were still behind. Specifically, the analysis found that over half of the 154 institutions surveyed had failed to match criteria set out for 2020-21 by the Higher Education Funding Council for England in 2010. On page 10, Steve Richmond, Head of Marketing and Technical for REHAU Building Solutions is advocating the specification of more sustainable heating and cooling solutions in educational buildings following the publication of analysis suggesting most UK universities are not on track to hit emissions targets. As with every issue of MBS, I would be very keen to hear your thoughts and welcome all feedback.
