Modern Building Services
EDITOR’S COMMENT MODERN BUILDING SERVICES FEBRUARY 2021 3 Welcome to the February issue of MBS Journal S o that’s 2020 well and truly behind us now. What legacy has been left behind and where do we go from here?! ONS figures showed construction output fell by 35% in Spring but then revived by 42% in the third quarter*. With the current vaccine roll out finally underway and the promise of many construction projects on the horizon, there is much to look forward to in 2021. Did you know that most of us spend up to 90% of our time indoors?! In this issue we’ll touch on Indoor Air Quality, one of the hottest topics during this pandemic. How do we ensure work places/spaces are safe? We continue to look at energy management, how are facilities and energy managers effectively using the data provide. Are we actually improving energy performance and meeting the changing needs of occupants? Listed buildings are always a challenge and specifiers, designers and installers are having to be more and more creative, especially with the installation of electrical distribution networks. Case in point; are shallow floors, we will look at suggestions on how to overcome these issues. FIRE! Preventative measures are usually the best way to ‘save’ future catastrophe for buildings and businesses. Adequate fire protection of data cabling is paramount, as are state of the art fire alarms. Whilst he does not in any way advocate that his understanding of certain issues is the final certainty in any way what so ever, he does believe Covid infection is a subject building engineering services engineers are being exercised over.
