44 www.theisba.org.uk CONFERENCE SPEAKERS Anjali Kothari (As before) Peter Nicholls Peter is a highly experienced director of finance, operations and governor at board level in the charity, public and private sectors. A chartered accountant, his current executive role is chief operating officer at Rugby School, responsible for all the infrastructure and support functions for the school, as well as a key role in developing and delivering on the board’s strategic vision. At Rugby School, Peter is responsible for leading the non-teaching functions of the school, including finance, HR, estates, IT, operations and commercial trading, to help provide an outstanding teaching and learning environment at the school. E3 10.10 – 11.10 Supporting the single central register – the mechanics of safe and effective recruiting Katie Fudakowski (As before) Rex Sartain Rex retired from the British Army in 2013 with plenty of experience in HR, estates, training, compliance and daily operations. Since then he has gained further valuable skills and experience working as an operations and academy manager and then as a programme Manager for HSBC in business support, employer relations, transition and change delivery. After completing the business management course at Manchester Business School, Rex worked as a bursar in full time and interim roles and developed his consulting work in the sector – building on his experience of managing budgets, people, compliance and estates. Rex currently supports, as a consultant, the advice and guidance service to ISBA member schools in particular in the areas of compliance, inspection, safeguarding and health & safety. He is a governor of Shrewsbury Colleges Group and Prestfelde Prep School, which broadens his experience in education and gives a little back to the county he now calls home. Kristine Scott (As before) E4 10.10 – 11.10 Premises development masterplans and how to compile them John Murphie, chair (As before) Rob Buckley Rob is a partner at Synergy Construction and Property Consultants. Originally from a contracting background, Rob joined the practice (which was then Parker & Browne) in 1994 and became a full partner in 2000. Rob is the partner responsible for the Marketing and Business Development function at Synergy. A Chartered Quantity Surveyor, Rob has significant experience in the education, ecclesiastical, mixed use, commercial and leisure sectors. In particular, Rob has gained a tremendous reputation within the independent education sector with experience across a wide range of projects including sports centres, sixth form centres, science buildings, new junior schools, libraries, multi-purpose halls, performing arts centres, boarding houses, academic centres, design and technology schools as well as masterplans. Julian Harbottle Julian Harbottle is head of Savills Western Region and head of the Development and Valuation team in the South West and South Wales. He specialises in advising on development projects throughout the region, as well as immediate and strategic land opportunities. He has been a governor at Badminton School and Clifton College in Bristol and has advised a number of other private schools regarding their property assets. Stephen Hutton Stephen is an area director in Lloyds Commercial Banking specialising in the education sector. He is responsible for leading a team of relationship directors /managers whose key accountabilities are to understand the sector and to add value through providing appropriate guidance or solutions. Stephen joined Lloyds Bank in December 1992 straight from university, having studied economic geography and behavioural sciences. Throughout his career with Lloyds, Stephen has worked in relationship-based roles ranging from senior manager local commercial banking, head of professional practices to his current position in education. Stephen enjoys and actively seeks client interactions and building relationships with professional trusted partners and attends many meetings with his relationship management team. Annabel Lait Annabel is an associate director at Morgan Sindall Group and Saunders Architecture and Urban Design. She is a highly experienced chartered architect with specialist education and residential sector knowledge. She has worked on complex, high-end residential schemes and large, mixed tenure housing projects alongside projects for primary, secondary, higher and further education. Annabel takes projects from initial concept design through planning, and onto project delivery on site. Most recently, Annabel was responsible for a multi-phased, residential scheme in South London and a new addition to an 18th century girls’ school in East London. E5 10.10 – 11.10 Digital decision making and predicting spend Ian Phillips, chair Ian is chair of the Independent Schools Council’s (ISC’s) Digital Strategy Group. He is currently harnessing the appetite of tech companies to enable ISC students to become the global problem solvers who will tackle the world’s currently and future unsolvable issues. To his ISC role, Ian brings 35 years of classroom experience most recently as assistant headteacher – director of computing and ICT at The Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School. There he was responsible for assessment of pupil learning using technology and passionate about developing systems which simplify the way schools work. For the past 14 years Ian has supported schools with national conferences and strategic planning through action research projects, regular bulletins, audits, workshops, training days and blue-sky consultancy. He is co-editor of Developing Digital – the guide for schools’ senior leaders developed collaboratively between schools, EdTech partners and the Education Foundation. Ian was named in the EdTech50 people, projects and products shaping UK’s EdTech. He is a Microsoft innovator education expert and Intel visionary.
