As chief operating officer, he is responsible for the head office internal organisation and functions and he is the main point of contact for advice and guidance to schools. John spent 31 years in the Royal Navy retiring in 2007, since then, he has worked as the chapter clerk in Portsmouth Cathedral, managed a barristers’ chambers in London and been a bursar in two schools before joining ISBA. Tabitha Cave Tabitha is a partner and leads VWV’s regulatory compliance team. She provides pragmatic advice on regulatory issues at an operational and governance level, on liability and the management of risk and on reputation protection for independent schools. She is instrumental in developing the firm’s range of compliance services. She advises bursars, heads and governors on the appropriate investigation and management of serious incidents and compliance issues and has considerable expertise in dealing with complex multi-disciplinary matters, such as the management of safeguarding allegations and the interplay with related enquiries. Tabitha regularly writes articles and delivers training on education issues, including for Independent Education Today, Funding for Independent Schools, ISBA, AGBIS, Optimus Publishing and IOSH. She is a member of the HSLA and the Education Group of IOSH. Penny Chapman Penny is a partner at BDB Pitmans. Her charity expertise includes setting up and advising charitable organisations, including independent schools, chartered associations and professional bodies. She has particular experience in advising public authorities on their role as charity trustees and on public / private / charity collaborations. She advises trustees and governing bodies on their fiduciary and regulatory duties, constitutional and governance issues, and commercial and fundraising contracts. In addition to her work for charities, Penny has a strong private client practice, in particular, providing tax planning for entrepreneurs and advising on the use of trusts in a commercial context. Penny is a trustee for a number of charities and a governor at Abingdon School. Katie Fudakowski Katie is a partner at Farrer & Co whose practice spans safeguarding, education and employment law. She draws upon a decade of litigation experience in private practice as a barrister and advises schools, education business and sports organisations on all issues involving children, parents and staff. As counsel for schools defending serious allegations of whistleblowing detriment, discrimination and unfair dismissal in the Employment and Employment Appeal Tribunals she brings real coal face experience to her advice. In pure education law, she has considerable expertise in applying the Equality Act 2010 to schools and in special educational needs cases, appearing in the Special Educational Needs Tribunal. She also covers the contractual side of education, advising on parental complaints and breach of contract claims. Through the Farrer & Co Safeguarding Unit she leads on safeguarding crisis management, organisation culture change and thought leadership. She is a co-author of the Farrer & Co Department for Education endorsed Guidance on Low-Level Concerns and is recognised by Legal 500 as a ‘next generation partner’ who is quick and responsive with excellent judgement. Kristine Scott, chair (As before) Jenny Arrowsmith (As before) Julie Moktadir Julie is a partner in the immigration team at Stone King LLP. She advises various organisations, including schools, on a broad range of immigration issues. Julie was previously head of immigration at the Royal College of Nursing and chief executive of a national education charity, IPSEA. Julie has a firm understanding of the education sector and works closely with clients in assisting with compliance, right to work and study checks and sponsorship issues. She supports independent schools in sponsoring pupils with Tier 4 visas and visits a number of independent schools to provide bespoke audit services. Julie also assists with sponsorship licence renewals and provides on hand support with the sponsorship management system for schools. Julie offers pragmatic solutions to workforce planning issue and is able to advise on how to recruit from within and outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Julie also provides tailored training sessions to support schools in relation to a variety of immigration matters, including on immigration compliance post-Brexit and other strategic issues. Jayne Offer Jayne is the director of human resources at Canford School, Dorset. During the past 12 years since joining Canford as the assistant bursar, Jayne reflects that the demands on schools to comply with ever increasing compliance and regulatory requirements, have been huge. Having been through many inspections during her 12 years at Canford and now as a compliance inspector, she also has experience of seeing the inspection process from the ‘dark side’ and can empathise with the pressure that staff are under when going through the inspection regime. Jayne also supports other schools in a consultancy capacity. With a remit covering HR, compliance, safeguarding and training and development, Jayne is considered by her school and many colleagues to be an expert in her field. She has an excellent understanding and practical implementation of employment legislation and very broad knowledge of compliance and regulatory matters in the sector. Michael Stephens With more than 20 years of international search and recruitment experience, Michael leads RSAcademics’ UK senior and all-through schools search practice. He studied geography at the University of Bristol and then joined a global insurance broker placing oil, gas and petrochemical business at Lloyd’s of London. He moved to Australia in 1998 and for five years ran the insurance practice at a leading recruitment firm in Sydney before setting up his own search and recruitment business placing experienced executives in Australia, UK, Middle East and Asia. He joined RSAcademics in 2015. Michael is always delighted to speak to individuals who are considering moving on at some stage in the future or those interested in a specific opportunity.
