31 @the_isba Annual Conference 2021 ADVERTORIAL A school is more than just its buildings. The environment in which pupils learn plays a significant part in their development by influencing behaviour, promoting learning and impacting wellbeing. A simple and creative route to an inspiring school Well designed improvements to school grounds, whether refurbishments or specific new buildings, can revitalise a school; pupils and staff are invigorated, parents value the investment and a commitment to the future of the school is demonstrated. Many schools have a clear vision but are unclear how to realise it. Saunders Architects and Morgan Sindall have used their combined experience to develop a step-by-step process to guide the development from an idea into a long-lasting building for generations to come. The brief This is the foundation stone of every successful project. It needs to consolidate input from a wide range of stakeholders to establish functional or quantitative area requirements alongside the qualitative need for the proposal to reflect the ethos or essence of the school. Diagrams are prepared to graphically present the requirements of the brief and these form the starting point for the design. Site analysis The existing site is analysed to establish the key parameters of the setting and to define the constraints and opportunities. Diagrams record findings graphically and are used to inform the design proposals in the next stages. Feasibility options and costing In response to the client brief and site analysis, schematic design options are prepared and developed for review with the school. These are initially presented as simple diagrams but can be developed into model form to bring the design intent to life. The development of the initial design proposal is an iterative process which results in a scheme which creatively responds to both the brief and the specific qualities of the site. Initial costings of early proposals ensure that the scheme is affordable before the design is developed further. Design development for planning With initial diagrammatic proposals agreed and budgets established, the design can be developed with confidence for planning submission. Pre-application meetings are held with the local authority to address any planning concerns at an early stage. Layouts, elevations and visuals are prepared to illustrate the spatial arrangement, the architectural language and the proposed material palette for the project. Developing the design for construction The planning scheme is developed and information is prepared for construction of the scheme. Early collaboration between architect and contractor maximises the benefits relating to buildability, robust detailing and cost- effective construction solutions. Morgan Sindall have in-depth knowledge of construction for the education sector and their input in the detailed design of schemes is invaluable. The build The delivery of a construction project on a working school site needs to be managed safely, sensitively and efficiently alongside the day-to-day running of the school. Morgan Sindall is experienced in working within educational environments and keeps the school informed on progress and can even suggest ways for the construction to provide educational opportunities. The aim is to hand over a robust, high-quality finished project, completed on programme and fulfilling the aspirations of the brief. How can we support you?
