@the_isba Summer 2018 3 Editorial Welcome to the Bursar’s Review... from ISBA’s chief executive, David Woodgate. As the summer holidays lie pleasantly ahead of us, I hope you will be able to find some time away from the desk to reflect on this academic year and thumb through a copy of this issue of the Bursar’s Review. With the now infamous GDPR impacting on all aspects of school life (more on that on page 8) there has certainly been no shortage of ‘to dos’ on the list for bursars and senior managers over the past 10 months. I’d like to personally thank you all for your feedback and suggestions on the GDPR guidance we have produced this year − it has been gratifying for us all here at ISBA to see so many members engaging with the work of the association. I hope you have found the template documentation of use on your journey to GDPR compliance, but it doesn’t stop here – we’re available to answer any of your queries, GDPR-related or not, and always welcome comments on our services so please do get in touch with us. As I write, we also have news of the revised DfE guidance Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSiE) coming into force for September 2018 and I’m pleased to say that this too will be covered by the association in all of its updates to template documentation over the summer. With safeguarding never far from the forefront of the minds of all those working in schools, page 30 of this issue sees Charlotte Aynsley, online safety consultant at RM Education, examine how staff can protect children online, both in the classroom and away from it. And while school lockdown is a potential scenario nobody likes to dwell on, David Herbert, operations manager at Erskine Stewart’s Melville Schools, explains how to prepare for and manage such a situation at school with practical advice every bursar should read (page 39). Finally, I would like to thank all those who attended ISBA’s annual conference in Brighton this year. We welcomed more delegates than ever before to the event and 92 percent rated the professional development programme to be ‘good or excellent’. Thank you also for your detailed feedback on all aspects of the conference which we are now analysing to ensure Conference 2019 in Manchester fully meets members’ needs and expectations. Turn to page 46 for the highlights of this year’s conference and see if you can spot yourself in the photos! May I wish you all a relaxing summer break.
