By the time you read this, you will be in the throes of the autumn term, with its promise of another busy academic year ahead. Brexit may or may not be about to happen and your school may or may not be leaving TPS but one thing will be certain: your role will still be integral to the success of your school. Whether you are bursar or bursar and clerk to the governors, managing the governance aspect of your role – a position of considerable strategic influence – can sometimes be challenging. On page 10 of this issue of the Bursar’s Review, Colonel Bob Pearce MBE, bursar at Pipers Corner school, examines the critical role of providing advice to the governing body of a school, and discusses how you can maximise the value of your own contribution to good governance. On page 18 Sam Coutinho explores the issue of diversity in governance, suggesting some practical tips on how to ensure your school’s governing body is reflective of the school’s community and wider society as a whole. Of course your governors are just one stakeholder group to consider as you go about your day-to-day tasks. On page 40 Dr Stuart Thomson considers the power that lies in engaging meaningfully with your school’s network, both internal and external, and the benefits this can bring to all those connected with your school. This summer you may have read press coverage of a case where the Upper Tribunal held that independent schools can be ordered to reinstate an excluded pupil and risk being in contempt of court if they fail to do so. We provide detailed guidance on this landmark decision on page 49 and highlight particular points schools should bear in mind when considering exclusions. Finally, I would like to draw your attention to our brand new professional development programme for this coming academic year. The programme features a number of new courses including a new crisis management and business continuity conference on 10th March 2020 and a catering conference on 26th May 2020 at Goodenough College in London, which will be run by a working group of catering specialists including Sodexo, MYA, Holroyd Howe and others. To find out more about the training on offer this year please see page 68. David Woodgate Chief executive
