One of the things I am particularly proud of, as ISBA’s chief executive, is the way in which our members don’t hesitate to engage with us on the issues that matter most. From legislative matters such as GDPR (sorry to remind you of that one!) to political concerns like charitable status or VAT on fees, we value open communication with all our members – big and small. And we always strive to take your feedback on board and channel it into improved services that make a practical difference for you in your day-to-day roles. To this end we are pleased to launch our first ever smaller schools' conference on 5th December 2018 at BMA House in London. Offering a programme of experts whose experience is tailored for smaller schools and their unique challenges, this bespoke one-day course is open to schools with fewer than 400 pupils and will offer a valuable forum for networking with like-minded colleagues. Read more about the new course on page 8. The summer also saw us re-develop our online advice and guidance resources for members, with the creation of a brand new reference library (page 12). If you haven’t visited the library yet, you will be pleased to find that, as well as an improved search function to help you navigate a wealth of template policies and guidance notes, there are also now dedicated template documents for Welsh schools, with a section for Scottish schools currently in production. Our work with Castle Minibus to improve minibus safety outcomes for schools has culminated in the launch of ISBA’s new Minibus Compliance Course (MCC) this term. Approved by the RAC, RoSPA and a former transport commissioner for England, the MCC covers the licencing, permit and legalities of school minibus operations as well as driver and journey management. It is delivered in two parts; a one-day training course followed by an on-site assessment – read more about how the course can help you and your team on page 26. Finally, in the light of the #MeToo movement, which has highlighted the ongoing worldwide issue of sexual harassment, we explore the potential risks within the school environment. Find out how you can provide a safer workplace for your employees (as well as your pupils) on page 15. STOP PRESS – as I write, the news has broken that the proposed increase in employer contributions to the TPS in September 2019 will be 23.6 percent. We are taking professional advice on a number of issues and working out how to respond – we will update members as the way forward emerges.
