CONFERENCE SPEAKERS 28 Sam MacDonald Sam is the head of Farrer & Co's education practice (covering both schools and higher education). He is a charity law specialist with considerable experience in advising schools in connection with regulatory and constitutional matters, fundraising, mergers, acquisitions and closure. Sam is regularly involved in high level restructuring and complex governance issues in independent schools, free schools, academies and multi academy trusts. He also assists overseas schools on a range of matters. Sam is a governor of an independent prep school and trustee of a national education charity. He researches and writes The Independent Education Sector Report, helping schools and colleges to understand and profit from trends in the UK and overseas markets. His areas of expertise include making consumer research business-oriented, generating insightful market analysis and predicting demand for new school services. Gavin has an MA from Oxford University and an MBA from London Business School. Melanie Tucker Melanie has worked with many independent schools, helping them to develop effective business models and marketing strategies. She has a track record of increasing recruitment and income and is an innovative thinker and expert in business strategy in the sector. She has worked as a senior manager in independent boarding education and held chief executive posts in the world of business and education. She was the first to establish a management consultancy specialising in research, marketing and business strategy for the independent education sector, and has developed the leading system of market analysis called Catchmentor®. She has an MA in educational management from London University and an MBA from Nottingham Business School where she majored on entrepreneurism. B4 10.10 – 11.10 INSPECTION ■ weak areas ■ best practice Kate Richards As chief inspector, Kate is responsible for the strategic design of the inspection frameworks in England and overseas and the entire end to end inspection process for ISI. Kate’s key focus is on ensuring that inspection focuses on the pupils by challenging and supporting schools to safeguard and develop their learners’ knowledge, skills and understanding as effectively as possible. She oversees the recruitment, training and quality assurance of inspectors as well as the scheduling, delivery and completion of all inspections. She also represents the professional expertise of ISI at national and international level. Prior to joining ISI, as an experienced inspector, school leader and consultant Kate worked extensively in and with a wide range of schools, trusts, a national charity and local authorities. B5 10.10 – 11.10 ORGANISATIONAL CHANGE, MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS Barney Northover Barney has 20 years' experience at VWV advising independent schools and charities on their governance, constitutional review, strategic projects and charity law. He has developed a special interest and expertise in advising schools on strategy and structural change including charity mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and collaborations. Barney understands the governors' perspective in challenging situations, having been a governor of two schools. He can guide you through the traps and pitfalls and give you the confidence needed to deal with challenging situations and to take difficult decisions in the best interests of your school.
