There’s something deeply satisfying about finding a cheaper deal whether in an actual shop or, more likely these days, online. And that’s fine in most cases, because usually the worst that can happen is that you’ll be disappointed with your purchase and have to go through the rigmarole of sending it back. It’s a very di¢erent story, though, with illegal refrigerant. As well as presenting a threat to the environment, it can al so be a danger to life. Which is why news of the confiscation of gases in non-refillable containers being used by a contractor is an important step forward (see page 6). The seizure was made by Trading Standards o§cers and the HSE, following a tip-o¢ to REFCOM, and the counterfeit gas – marked as non- flammable R134a – was seen to catch fire. There has been criticism at the lack of enforcement of the F-Gas Regulation, but hopefully this will send a message to anyone hoping to save a few pounds. This is not an area where buying from an unknown source is a good idea in any circumstances. If the deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Elsewhere, there has been a qualified welcome to the Government’s Green Homes Grant (see page 34). Funding for energy-saving measures in UK households is seen as a broadly positive step, with homeowners able to access significant subsidies for heat pumps and other improvements. Yet the welcome is accompanied by warnings that it is not nearly enough. With some commentators estimating that close to 1 million heat pumps or other alternative methods of heating need to be installed every year if the UK is to meet its 2050 Net Zero emissions target, it is di§cult to see that being achieved without further action in the retrofit market.
