We add DNA which is bene cial to the plant. e potato has around 3000 receptors of the type we are adding, and to confer resistance, we simply add three more.” “We start o with thousands of plant shoots that have been selected for receiving the DNA of interest, a few hundred of these are then rooted, and checked to ensure only the desired DNA is in the plant. We then check we have the traits we want.” ese plants then went out to eld trials in Norfolk in 2018, and showed that stacking three genes confers complete blight resistance, with unprotected plants destroyed by late blight. As a result, in 2019 the team tested 23 more such lines. ese were also shown to be completely resistant to tuber blight including against new aggressive blight strains. “In this trial we had enough tubers to do a basic yield trial, using the Maris Piper variety, with the control plots being sprayed against blight so the transgenic crop did not have an advantage. Basically, yields proved to be indistinguishable.” ey also tested with tuber blight, and the transgenic line was completely immune, he said. Of these 23 lines, 11 have been chosen for yield trials in 2020, and trials will be undertaken in collaboration with NIAB. ere are more varieties in the trials pipeline too. Prof Jones said: “Maris Piper is not a high dry-matter variety.
