Potato Review

From crop protection to carbohydrate trends, the BP2019 seminar programme has it all covered. No tickets or bookings required … just turn up for what interests you and be sure of knowledgeable speakers, plenty of opportunity for questions and perhaps even one-to-one follow-up discussion. As always, the varied seminar programme will be covering the whole supply chain, from essential agronomy updates to the latest market intelligence. This includes a timely look at practical responses to changes in the crop protection ‘toolbox’ available for 2020, as options will be unrecognisable from those of just a few years ago. In particular, the first seminar of day 1 will be looking at AHDB’s Strategic Potato (SPot) farm trials and demonstrations on diquat and linuron replacements. Post-diquat it’s anticipated that some crops will be relatively easy to desiccate. For instance, few problems are expected where it’s possible to select determinate varieties and to grow them without excess nitrogen on light land. However, AHDB projects being presented at the show have focused on helping growers in more difficult circumstances – for example, with indeterminate varieties, salad or seed crops with precise size requirements, heavier land, wet weather or with foliar or tuber diseases in the crop. Following this, the second seminar of the day will maintain this focus on keeping the full potential of the crop, by examining the latest storage practices, with particular emphasis on issues surrounding effective sprout suppression. Meanwhile, AHDB’s market intelligence team will be leading two sessions. The first, on day 1, looking at European competitors and how their figures compare to ours – similarities, differences and potential opportunities. Then, on day 2, as a first for the event, the team will be back to present the first release of the GB Production Estimate for 2019 live – figures that are based on input from AHDB’s Grower Panel members and that are keenly awaited by industry as a guide to how the season will play out. Other timely business-related subjects across the two days include succession planning, development funding and getting a fix on consumer thinking. 10.00 No diquat, no linuron - what next?
