Potato Review

Contents Welcome to BP2019! Bringing colleagues? As this Show Guide goes to press few seem ready to call whether we’ll be gathering in Harrogate hard on the heels of Britain’s departure from the EU, or if the issue will still be rolling on. Yet it’s abundantly clear the potato industry is doing what it always does and looking to get business done. Of course, evolving trading relationships are just one aspect of change in an industry where details of how we grow, handle and present the crop march on relentlessly. Perhaps that’s why visitor surveys show the every-other-year timing of BP events is just what’s wanted – close enough to keep pace with technological and commercial developments, while far enough apart to justify investing the time to attend. “Two days very well spent to stay ahead,” as one visiting grower wrote. Lazy commentators may refer to the ‘humble spud’ and treat it as merely a long-standing staple. But those in the know are well aware the nutritious, versatile tuber is the perfect fit for modern lifestyles, while its producers exemplify cutting-edge innovation. Indeed, at a time when politicians laud Britain’s world-leading expertise and reputation, it’s natural to assume they’re referencing the potato industry! Like previous shows, BP2019 is set to combine this optimism about the future for potatoes with the practical detail of how key challenges will be met. There are more exhibitors than ever before and a huge range of new products, services and approaches to see. And once again, the whole supply chain is covered. So, whether you’re looking to ‘sniff out’ disease in store (literally in the case of new detectors on display!), or the latest consumer trends, the event has it all. We’re particularly pleased to be welcoming a record number of entirely new exhibitors. And we’re proud of those we’ve turned away – BP events have always been about potatoes and doing business, so we don’t expect you to wade past miracle knife sharpeners, sensational sponges and indestructible drills. Instead, the event remains laser-focused on information needed to plot a successful route ahead. An event so focused on the future would be incomplete without the rising generation on whose shoulders future competitiveness rests. So once again we are welcoming educational institutions. If you’re reading this prior to the event and have a young talent at home, on your farm or in your business, then why not bring them along? With so much to see, it can’t help but convince them this is a great industry to work in. We would like to thank all exhibitors, partners and sponsors for the support that makes the show possible, as well as our seven media partners for spreading the word. Everything is set for an excellent and productive event. Thank you for taking the time to attend. 2 The record number of exhibitors means every single part of the industry is covered. So, with so much to see and hear, should you be bringing colleagues? Whether they work on your farm, manage your factory engineering or engage with consumers, there are masses of relevant developments to see at the show. No matter how many FREE tickets you need, registering in advance is quick and easy and will give you even faster access on the day – simply go to www.bp2019.co.uk and click on ‘Visitor registration’.
